The borough was once the cigar making capital of the world and to this day in honor of New Years Day, a giant cigar is raised rather than dropping a ball. The furniture industry also helped drive the economic wheel of the area with several large factories producing elegant and ornate hand crafted furniture for more than 100 years.
The borough is home to annual street fairs, concerts, car shows, seasonal festivals and neighborhood celebrations. One of the most popular family event is the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony that officially opens the Christmas season.
